WHAT IS A MECHANISM?Mechanisms are devices that have been designed to make jobs easier. They all have certain things in common: They involve some kind of motion. They involve some kind of force. They must have some kind of input to make them work. They produce some kind of output. If we connect mechanisms together we can build mechanical systems called machines. Mechanisms can also be used to make moving toys like the caterpillar and the other toys featured in this program.

Kissing CoupleTwo pairs of double cams make the heads of the kissing couple move up and down and turn from side-to-side.The cams are joined to the main shaft and rotate when the crank is turned.



PenguinAfter a slight push to send it on it's way, the penguin rocks backwards and forwards as it moves down the ramp. This type of motion is called oscillating motion.






Turn the crank and 4 circular cams make the blackbirds in the pie move up and down.This type of movement is called reciprocating motion.
The four blackbirds on the central dowel are made to rotate by a friction wheel attached to the main shaft.






Mechanical MonkeyTurn the crank and the monkey's body moves in a circle (rotary motion). The monkey is connected to the input crank by a metal rod which runs through an eyelet.
